Creator Balwinder Singh Janjua, who has previously written screenplays for films such as Saand Ki Aankh (2019), CAT is a crime thriller set in Punjab, a place besieged by cartels, cocaine and corrupt cops. The show chronicles the journey of Gary (Abhishant Rana), an innocent Sikh teenager who becomes entangled in a drug trafficking conspiracy involving gang lords, cops, and political powers. Soon after his parents were killed by terrorist Baljit Rajpuria (Gurinder Makna), Gary became a police informant known as CAT during the 1990s insurgency. Later, he adopts the identity of Gurnam Singh and leads a simple life to raise his younger siblings. When Sunny (Danish Sood), his younger brother, is arrested for drug trafficking, Gurnam is forced to seek help from a former acquaintance, Sehtab Singh. In exchange for letting his brother off the hook, Sehtab forces Gurnam to join his core team—Chandan (Pramod Pathak) and Babita (Hasleen Kaur)—on a mission to shut down the drug trade. Will he be able to save Punjab and his brother from the drugs?

This eight-part series—40-45 minutes per episode—is a gripping tale of crime, brotherhood, espionage, and familial love laced with lots of drama and action. Janjua, who has co-written and co-directed the show with Jimmy Singh and Rupinder Chahal, has made sure that each episode builds on the previous one, keeping a tight leash on the narrative. Even the characters’ backstories have been seamlessly woven into the narrative through Gurnam’s eyes as he guides the viewer through the build-up and the thrilling climactic sequence.

Several tracks run concurrently, making it difficult to keep track of everything, like that of Madam Aulakh (Geeta Agrawal), a powerful politician, and her daughter Kimi (Kavya Thapar), an obsessive fan of Punjabi rock star Rocky Ranjha (Eklavey Kashyap). Aulakh fearlessly runs the drugs trade with the help of her Shamsher Bhaisahab (Jaipreet Singh), his son Monty (Manish Gulati), and partner Laadi (Dakssh Ajit Singh), each of whom has a distinct backstory. In fact, every character in the show has stories from their past and present to tell, which eventually gets too much to handle.

CAT is clearly Randeep Hooda’s triumph. He imbues Gurnam with a strong sense of humanity. Hooda captures the viewer’s attention in every frame with the right amount of seriousness required for his character. His younger counterpart, played by Abhishant Rana, steals the show with his expressions. Scenes like Gurnam’s helplessness while asking his brother to refrain from using drugs and Madam Aulakh’s sharing of her past will move you. Suvinder Vicky, most recently seen in Ivan Ayr’s Milestone (2020), is excellent as Sehtab Singh. His character is mysteriously established from the start.

Midway through, the series becomes overly indulgent and sluggish. It’s also intensely dark, with some gory killings making you cringe. However, its victory lies in making you empathise with its characters. The majority of the females on the show are victims of physical abuse and are fighting their demons and destinies, and you shed a silent tear. Geeta Agrawal excels as Madam Aulakh by capturing the right body language and attitude, and Hasleen Kaur also shines as the zealous cop Babita.

Like any other spy thriller, the action sequences are well executed. Arvind Krishna’s cinematography captures Punjab’s real and rustic feel well. The series is filled with upbeat and peppy Punjabi songs, particularly Jatt Vekh Lugaa and Goli Chaldi. And the background music by Jam8 and Joel Crasto blends well and adds energy to the show.

CAT is a riveting thriller that soars on the strength of strong performances by Randeep Hooda and the rest of the cast. So, if intense dramas with interesting plot twists pique your interest, you can also give this one a shot.
