Today’s republic consists of the historic Croatian region of Croatia-Slavonia (located at the upper arm of the country), Istria (centered on the Istria peninsula on the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea), Dalmatia (corresponding to the coastal areas). Although dominated by various foreign powers for centuries, these regions are culturally very western and are a legacy of Roman law, the Latin alphabet, and the political and economic traditions and institutions of Western Europe.
