Italy, a country in Southern Central Europe, occupies a peninsula that juts deep into the Mediterranean. Italy embraces some of the most diverse and scenic landscapes on the planet and is often described as a boot-shaped country. One of the steepest mountains in the world, the Alps rises to its wide summit. The highest points in Italy are Monte Rosa, which culminates in Switzerland, and Mont Blanc, which culminates in France. The Western Alps overlooks the landscape of alpine lakes and glacier-carved valleys that stretch over the river Po and Piedmont. Tuscany, south of the Cisalpine region, is probably the most famous region in the country. Radiating from the Central Alps, which runs the length of the country, is the high Apennines near Rome to cover almost the entire width of the Italian Peninsula. To the south of Rome, the Apennines are narrow and adjacent to two wide coastal plains. One faces the Tyrrhenian Sea and the other faces the Adriatic Sea. Many of the lower Apennine chains are mostly wild and are home to a variety of species rarely found elsewhere in Western Europe, such as wild boars, wolves, vipers, and bears. The southern Apennines are also structurally unstable, with several active volcanoes, including Mount Vesuvius, which occasionally spew ash and steam over the bay surrounded by Naples and its islands. At the end of the country, in the Mediterranean, there are Sicily and Sardinia.
