A visual treat, Neelavelicham would have done much better with some added flair to the plot. But that’s neither here nor there as remakes often tend to get shamed if the new treatment goes wrong. A remake of 1964 romantic-horror movie, Bhargavi Nilayam, based on screenplay by renowned writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, Neelavelicham lives up to the hype and stays true to the original as far as plot is concerned. Director Aashiq Abu succeeds in trying to change the visual treatment and making it more palatable to the modern audience. Even the white wearing ‘yakshi’ didn’t seem too out of place or we end up taking a white wearing ghost seriously after a long while. There is no unnecessary horror elements thrown in and the use of blue light in key scenes clearly shows how well thought out each scene is.

One major gripe with the movie is that it didn’t keep the viewers on edge at any point of time. That said, we can watch Tovino who plays the role of the writer in the movie, explore the coastal hamlet, converse with locals and the ghost who haunts his rented house- Bhargavi played by Rima Kallingal , go on night trips through the haunted property for hours. While nothing much happened in the first half, we can let these scenes wash over us. Tovino delivers a grounded performance as the writer and Rima is good as Bhargavi. Roshan Mathew’s Sasikumar is different and he delivers with grace. Shine Tom Chacko is spot on as Nanukuttan.

The re-enactment of the age old romantic trope in Malayalam cinema, lovers conversing from opposite sides of a wall, was actually cute and not over done or over dramatized, though the dialogues in that part were a little too cheesy. The soundtracks were soothing and to someone belonging to the latter half of the seven decades since Bhargavi Nilayam, refreshing and does justice to the originals composed by MS Baburaj. Biji Bal and Rex Vijayan were behind the efforts and the music adds a lot to the movie.
