What is a GST number?

A GST Registration Number officially called a GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) — is a unique 15-digit code issued by the Government of India to every registered business. It is used to track all tax transactions, file returns, and claim input tax credit (ITC). Without a GSTIN, you cannot legally collect GST from your customers or sell on major platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, or Meesho.

Who needs GST registration?

You must register for GST if any of the following apply to you:

Turnover > ₹20 lakh (services)
Turnover > ₹40 lakh (goods)
Selling on e-commerce platforms
Inter-state supply of goods
Import/export business
Voluntary registration

Tip for dropshippers: Even if your turnover is below the threshold, register voluntarily from day one. Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho all require a GSTIN to list products — no exceptions.

Is GST registration free?
Yes — registration on the official gst.gov.in portal is completely free. Be careful of third-party websites that charge fees.
How long does GST registration take?
With Aadhaar OTP verification: 3–7 working days. Without Aadhaar verification: 2–3 weeks, as a physical inspection may be required.
